May Books

I'm a little late on my books for the month!  I'm in the middle of one book and I thought I might be able to finish before the month, alas...I didn't.  I did read 3 great books in May.  I'm hoping that with the end of school, I'll be able to read a little bit more.  I have lots of books to read for my AP class I'm teaching, but also a ton of "fun reads" I want to delve into!  Here was what I read in May:

1. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter by Seth Grahame-Smith

I have to say this is a huge departure from my normal reading list, but oh this was so good!  I have wanted to read this for some time, especially after hearing that it had been made into a film (which I hear was not so good).  I LOVE history, so this book really fed into my adoration for that specific subject.  It was so interesting how Grahame-Smith took parts of history and wove them into his tale.  He details Lincoln's whole life through journals and pictures, but interweaves them with bits of "possible truth".  The so-called vampire hunting is something of legend...but it's so neat how the author makes the reader believe how it could really happen.  The characters are vivid and real.  The dialogue is intriguing, and the plot makes the reader turning the pages.  If you are a history fan, supernatural fan, or Lincoln fan, I highly recommend this book.

2. Carry On, Warrior: Thoughts on Life Unarmed by Glennon Doyle Melton

Glennon Doyle Melton is amazing.  Simply put...amazing.  I love her honesty, her view on life, and how she uses her life as a beautiful example of living.  Her blog, Momastery, is wonderful, too.  This book is more like a series of essays from her blog.  Glennon is a recovering alcoholic and makes no apologies for what her life was like.  Instead, she takes all that she learned and makes it into a beautiful life, or as she says a "brutiful" life.  I love her outlook on life...that it isn't always pretty.  It's hard.  Really hard.  I have never dog-earred so many pages in a book!  There are so many quotes that I loved from the book.  She writes like a friend.  Honest and raw.  Brutal and beautiful.

3. Call Me Zelda by Erika Robuck

I have a dark confession to make.  One that almost cost me a friendship.  I've never read The Great Gatsby. I know, gasp, shock, say what?!  I'm appalled to and trust me, it's on my summer list!  However, after telling my friend, Lexie, a little white lie (and telling her I had read it), I accompanied her to see the new adaption of the movie.  I was instantly enthralled by the glamour and life that was the Fitzgerald's.  When I saw this book at Barnes and Noble, I had to get it.  OH MY GOSH, it was SO good!!  The book is from the point of view is from Zelda's nurse at her psychiatric unit.  The character of Zelda is so rich.  It's another story that weaves actual history with a little of "what if".  The dialogue is incredible and the story is wonderful.  I love reading about people from history, especially when they come alive in such a vibrant way.  I highly recommend this book.  Definitely read it if you're a Gatsby fan!!

Can't wait to share my June reads!

The House

Every time I walk to my bedroom, I look in the room that used to be my grandmother's bedroom.  I look for her bed and her laying in it ...
